City of Miami Tree Permits (Chapter 17)

Inside City limits, tree work is governed by Chapter 17 of the City of Miami Code, administered by the Environmental Resources Division of the City’s Building Department. In general, a City permit is required to remove or relocate a regulated tree, and also to prune more than 25% of a tree’s canopy within a one-year period. Some areas fall within Environmental Preservation Districts, where review is stricter, and removed trees usually have to be replaced or mitigated.

That makes City of Miami work different from unincorporated Miami-Dade, which falls under County Chapter 24.
